While planning Liverpool Township's (AKAValley City) 2010 Bicentennial the Committee decided to share some of its rich history by conducting a Spirit Walk. The idea is that spirits from Myrtle Hill Cemetery come back and tell their stories to interested families and friends. Myrtle Hill is, of course, the oldest cemetery in Medina County. The first burial was in June, 1812. The deceased was Ruth Deming, first of three wives of Moses Deming. Her father was Justus Warner, first landowner to actually live here. There was no saw mill for fresh cut boards. Only boards from the farm wagon were available. They were quickly made into her coffin. A hoe and ax were used to dig her grave, on top of a beautiful hill that overlooked their small valley and the infant village of Hardscrabble. On October 9, 2010, the first
Spirit Walk took place. It was hoped as many as 100 persons might
attend. Beautiful weather marked the day and night. Organizers were astounded
when some 250 people arrived over several hours and took the Walk. Their
feedback was quite positive, which encouraged a follow-on. On October 1, 2011 the second Spirit Walk took place. Unfortunately 4 days of cold rain preceded the event. And that day, while rain free, was cold and windy. Organizers decided the night before to not put actors and audience through a walking tour. Instead arrangements were quickly made so that all six stories were told in an enclosed pavilion. The 118 people who did attend enjoyed the cozy (relative) warmth of the enclosure and the richness of the stories. September 29, 2012 saw the third version. Six all new stories were portrayed under light of a full moon and clear, beautiful evening. Some characters appeared again, because their lives and experiences were well documented and are worth reliving. September 28, 2013 will be this year's Spirit Walk. Stories are being researched and written. Features added in 2012 will be continued, including limited seating at each story and full seating at two of them, for the convenience of our viewers. Join us for this growing historical/fun/entertaining evening. |
