Bauer Funeral Home celebrates 65 years in business. In 1943, Clyde Bauer, opened the funeral home right next to the family home, in what is still a rural country setting in Liverpool Township , away from the main activities of Valley City. For 35 years, he also operated an ambulance service until Liverpool Township’s service came into being in 1978, and his wife Mary attended to the record keeping and telephone tasks associated with the business. Bauer was a man of his time, with two female assistants working in the funeral home 24 years ago—his daughter Mary Ann and daughter-in-law, Madlyn.

The three worked together until 1989, when a stroke forced him to step down and let his children to take over.

Mary Ann and her brother Dan began working in the funeral home in their mid-teens, she playing the organ for funerals and he making ambulance runs. In 1988, with her Father’s encouragement, she became the first female licensed funeral director in Medina County.
She graduated from Cuyahoga Community college then served a two-year apprenticeship under her dad, who was very proud that both his children planned to stay on the homestead and carry on the family businesses.
Congratulations to the Bauer family for 65 years of successful business.
